The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, has taken a significant step towards making the country's rich cultural heritage available online by signing a memorandum of understanding with the digital platform Google Arts & Culture.

The Ministry of Culture has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Google Arts and Culture (GAC) to digitize India's cultural heritage, which is among the world’s most diverse and rich legacies. Under this collaboration, Google’s advanced 3D scanning, high‑resolution imaging and artificial‑intelligence‑based cataloguing technology will be used to digitally document India’s major museums, historic sites and cultural events.

The primary aim of this initiative is to expand access to cultural assets worldwide. The digitally available collection will include ancient manuscripts, sculptures, costumes, ancient dance forms of music and dance, and historic documents. This will enable researchers, teachers and the general public to experience India’s cultural diversity without physical travel. Moreover, because they will be hosted on Google’s platform, these resources will reach an even broader audience through multilingual interfaces and audio guides.

The ministry’s spokesperson said the agreement will aid both digital preservation and the development of cultural tourism. Collaboration with Google will allow India’s cultural heritage to be presented more effectively at the international level, increasing awareness among foreign tourists and researchers. Several cultural organisations have expressed support for this step, viewing it as a positive effort to strengthen India’s cultural identity on the global stage.
