A rapid increase in finished steel consumption was observed from April to October 2026, bringing India's total consumption to about 100 million tonnes, representing a significant increase compared to the previous year.

From April to October 2026, India’s consumption of finished steel reached nearly 100 million tonnes, signalling sustained growth in the sector. The primary driver of this increase is ongoing infrastructure development, housing construction, and industrial expansion across the country. Under the “Atal Bharat 2030” plan, large‑scale investment in roads, rail routes, and ports, coupled with rapid progress in both private and public housing projects, is boosting demand for finished steel. Additionally, growing interest in clean energy and the electric vehicle industry is diversifying the use of this metal, as the need for lightweight and durable steel components rises.

Industry experts believe that reaching this consumption level reflects improvements in the competitiveness and production capacity of the Indian steel industry. Over recent years, the modernization of several major steel plants and the establishment of new production lines have strengthened domestic supply, reducing dependence on imports. Moreover, measures under the National Steel Policy to encourage exports and promote technological innovation have contributed to the industry’s resilience. However, experts warn that volatility in raw material prices or a global economic downturn could temporarily depress consumption, so policymakers will need continuous monitoring and adjustment.
