India's small and medium enterprises (SMEs) benefited from a new scheme in 2024 to make a significant contribution to economic development through financial assistance, technology grants, and export support. This initiative accelerated notable progress in job creation and exports.
In India, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have played a major role in economic development over the past five years. In the 2023-2024 financial year, the SME sector recorded an average annual growth of 12.5 percent, increasing its contribution to national output by 8.3 percent. The government launched a financial assistance scheme of 15,000 crore rupees in the first quarter of 2024, aimed at strengthening innovation, digital transformation and export capacity. Under this initiative, 2.5 lakh new startups were provided with grants and loan facilities, expected to have a positive impact on job creation. Economic stability will also be promoted, creating new opportunities for growth.
The financial assistance scheme is called “Enterprise Development Fund 2024,” which includes machinery subsidies to increase production capacity, technology grants for adopting digital platforms, and market‑entry support to boost exports. Under the scheme, in 2024, 1.2 lakh small industries were provided with a grant of 5,000 crore rupees, while a cheap loan of 3,500 crore rupees was made available. The aim of this initiative is to increase the total income of SMEs by 10 percent by 2025 and strengthen their position in international competition.
Despite these opportunities, many enterprises still face financial constraints and technological hurdles. Especially in rural areas, banking access is limited, making it difficult to obtain loans. Moreover, a lack of digital skills and outdated production technology are causing losses in competitive markets. The government launched a “Digital Literacy Mission” in mid‑2024, aimed at providing IT training to 1.5 million workers by 2026, but the effectiveness of this program is still in the evaluation stage.
Employment creation figures reflect the positive outcomes of this policy. In the first half of 2024, the SME sector generated 4.2 lakh new jobs, of which 60 percent were women and 35 percent were youth. Improvement was also seen in exports; the total export value rose to 2.8 trillion rupees in 2024, with SMEs accounting for 22 percent. These figures are confirmed by the National Economic Survey 2024 and show that the expansion of small enterprises is making a significant contribution to economic stability.
Analysts believe that if financial assistance, technological upgrades and market access are enhanced in a coordinated manner, India could rank among the world’s top five entrepreneurship hubs by 2030. This will require continuous policy support, private investment and international cooperation. The success of the measures currently being implemented could attract more investment in the future and increase the global impact of Indian industry. Ultimately, the sustainable growth of small and medium enterprises will strengthen the foundation of national economic development.
