The Water Resources and River Development Department has recorded significant progress in water management, river development projects, and Ganga conservation programs under its new initiative.

The Ministry of Water Resources and River Development of the Government of India today disclosed the achievements made in water management, river development and Ganga conservation under its latest “Special Campaign 6”. The campaign aims to reduce water scarcity across the country, accelerate riverbank redevelopment, and restore the ecological health of the Ganga.

Key achievements under the campaign include the establishment of more than 3,000 km of new reservoirs and dams, landscape improvement works along up to 2,500 km of riverbanks, and the construction of water purification plants covering 1,200 km of the Ganga as well as 500 km of its lower reaches. These projects have resulted in a 12 % increase in regional agricultural production, an 18 % improvement in water availability, and a 15 % rise in the Ganga water quality index.

At the same time, the Ganga Conservation Department has approved new funding of 50 crore rupees under the “Ganga Revival Programme”, which is providing clean water and health facilities to 30 lakh families in the Ganga’s lower reaches. The department has also launched the “Smart Water” initiative to promote community participation in water conservation, enabling efficient management of water resources through digital monitoring and data analytics.

Through all these steps, the Government of India has made solid progress toward making water resource management more inclusive and sustainable. The success of “Special Campaign 6” makes it clear that coordinated policy, scientific technology, and public participation can confront the water crisis and re‑establish the purity and vitality of sacred rivers such as the Ganga.
