In the financial year 2026‑27, the government set the total rice sales under the Open Market Sale Scheme (domestic) at 50 LMT, doubling it, while sales of 25 LMT have already been completed through e‑auction.

The central government has increased the sales target of rice under the Open Market Sale Scheme (Domestic) for the financial year 2026‑27 from 25 lakh tonnes to 50 lakh tonnes. The move aligns with the government's broader objectives of grain storage policy, price stabilization and enhancing export earnings. In previous financial years, the rice target had hovered around 25 lakh tonnes, creating difficulties for the government in releasing seasonal excess production into the market and avoiding unnecessary storage costs. This target increase will not only reduce the pressure on government storage infrastructure, but will also increase the chances of farmers getting better prices.

Half the target, i.e. 25 lakh tonnes, has already been sold in the first half of this year through electronic auction (e-auction). Major food processing companies, large wholesalers and exporters are participating in the auction process, thereby increasing transparency and competition. E‑auction provided bidders with the opportunity to purchase at actual market prices, which helped control volatility in grain prices.

Analysts believe that doubling the target will generate additional revenue for the government and also help strengthen the country's food security goal. However, there are logistical challenges in implementing this large scope.
